ACL Open #7 Champs
With ACL Open #7 taking place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Team Ultra was out in full force! Team players from New Mexico, Arizona, California, Colorado and Texas were all in the house at the Expo NM. Team Ultra players from Illinois, New York, Indiana, and Michigan also made the trip. The results from Albuquerque were some of the best for the team yet this season.
Tier 1 Open Doubles
Headlining the Open was the Doubles victory by Team Ultra’s Moses and Pedro Zazueta. The brothers broke out on the national stage last season individually. This comes as their biggest win together as a doubles team. Both had really found their groove in the ACL’s Pro Shootout series last fall. In partnering together for 2023, we expected big things from this dynamic duo. Saturday night the boys got it done. Moses and Pedro worked their way through a stacked bracket winning 7 games all against ACL Pro teams. In winning the B bracket, Moses and Pedro bested Ryan Windsor and Alex Hicks in a 21 round barn burner. In the final, Moses and Pedro go even longer with a 30 round match against Eddie Grinderslev and Kaleb Batson. Moses averaged an astounding 11.2 over 15 rounds and 60 bags. 54 of those bags end up in the hole including 11 four baggers! Peter Jr. is right behind him with 7 4-baggers of his own and an impressive 10.13 over an equal 15 rounds. This Open win comes off their West Conference Doubles win and sets them up for big things going into the pro season.
Also in doubles, Team Ultra’s Dangerous Danny Seals and Yetty Irwan come out strong with a 3rd place bracket finish, having lost the king’s seat game to Moses and Peter. This new doubles team is also starting to gel nicely. Also having a big day was another set of brothers, Mike Sehlmeyer and Brandon Sehlmeyer. They finish 7th in their bracket in their hometown. There was a large contingent of local fans cheering the twins on in Albuquerque. The young gun Jeremy Frazier finishes 5th with Cheyenne Bubenheim to round out Team Ultra’s money winners.
Open Singles
In Singles, Moses Zazueta finished 2nd in his bracket. He was cruising going 3-1 on the winners side of the A-Bracket. Zazueta really got on a heater when he dropped into the loser’s bracket. He ran off a sequence of games that included 1012pts over 102 rounds and a 9.92 PPR. The pinnacle performace was an 11.67 in the 3rd place game where Zazueta missed just 2 bags. In addition to the run of Moses, Team Ultra players Doug Zafft, Jeremy Frazier and Peter Zazueta Jr. all tied for 5th in their respective brackets. If not for the great weekend by the Zazueta’s we would be writing about Frazier finishing 5th and 5th!
Women’s Singles
Yetty Irwan won Women’s Singles. She dominated going undefeated in the event. In the bracket final, she tops Cheyenne Bubenheim with a 10 PPR over 16 rounds. In the final she went 22 rounds against Isabella Suprenant with a 9.27 PPR for a 22-15 victory. Yetty has been enjoying the Psycho and Viper bags in her first season with Ultra.
Pro/Advanced Blind Draw
Team Ultra had some good runs in the Pro/Advanced Blind Draw as well. Eric Tscherne and Eddie Grinderslev picked up a 4th in their bracket while Ty Lopez and Russell Hurley tossed Psycho-X to a bracket 7th. Chris Roybal and Gauge Smith also finished tied for 7th in their bracket.
Team Ultra had 24 players make the trip. As the players made deep runs their teammates were there to cheer them on. Big crowds were had around the broadcast courts and late games creating a home court advantage unlike any other. We had 21 team players make Tier 1 for doubles which was no small accomplishment. Congrats to all who played so well and represented our Ultra all weekend.
